Animatics
An animatic is a timed storyboard or even a rough animation. The majority of the storyboards that I have worked on were created directly in the animatic format. With an animatic, you can nail down the pacing of your video and be assured that it fits within the available time slots.
Storyboards
The basic storyboard is probably more than enough for some projects. This can include live action projects and comic books. Sometimes a storyboard is created and approved before the creation of animatics for quicker iteration.
